Questo contributo indaga lo stretto rapporto che esiste tra la tendenza idolatrica e l’eclissi del sacro a partire dalle riflessioni di tre esponenti del pensiero ebraico del Novecento accomunati dalla tragica esperienza della persecuzione e da una riflessione che matura di fronte al dramma dell’Olocausto (Buber, Heschel e Jonas). Ripercorrendo le riflessioni di questi tre pensatori, il saggio mostra come, dal loro punto di vista, la piena manifestazione di Dio nella storia avviene quando l’essere umano si sottrae alla tentazione idolatrica del dominio e del possesso dell’alterità per aprirsi all’evento meta-fisico dell’incontro con un Tu trascendente capace di appellare alla responsabilità elevando, così, l’umano alla dimensione del sacro.

Idolatry and the Eclipse of the Sacred: Reflections from Twentieth-Century Jewish Thought
This contribution investigates the relationship that exists between idolatry and the eclipse of the sacred, starting from the reflections of three exponents of twentieth-century Jewish thought who are united by the tragic experience of persecution and a reflection that matures in the face of the drama of the Holocaust (Buber, Heschel and Jonas). By retracing the reflections of these three thinkers, the essay shows how, from their point of view, the full manifestation of God in history occurs when the human being escapes the idolatrous temptation of domination and possession of otherness in order to open up to the metaphysical event of the encounter with a transcendent You capable of appealing to responsibility, thus elevating the human being to the dimension of the sacred.
