Il saggio ripercorre il moderno mito ebraico del golem, un androide artificiale composto di argilla, la cui creazione è tradizionalmente attribuita al rabbino Yehudah Loew, vissuto a Praga nel XVI secolo e noto come il Maharal. Esso è stato considerato come il prototipo della creatività umana in campo scientifico-tecnologico, e fu connesso sin dagli anni Cinquanta del XX secolo alla rivoluzione cibernetica (Norbert Wiener) come lo è oggi agli sviluppi dell’intelligenza artificiale. Il pensiero ebraico contemporaneo (Gershom Scholem, André Neher, Byron Sherwin, Henri Altan, Moshe Idel) come pure un racconto di Primo Levi hanno esplorato le implicazioni etiche della storia del golem, offrendo intuizioni e riflessioni sulla necessità di porre dei limiti agli usi dell’AI, al fine di prevenire effetti collaterali distruttivi per l’umanità.

The Golem: the Jewish «Archetype» of Artificial Intelligence. Variations and Interpretations of a (Pre- and Post-) Modern Myth
The essay shows how the modern Jewish myth of the golem (an artificial android made of clay), whose creation is traditionally attributed to the Maharal of Prague (rabbi Yehudah Loew, XVI century), may be read as a prototype of scientific and technological human creativity. Actually it was connected to the cybernetic revolution in the Fifties (by Norbert Wiener) and nowadays to the developments of the AI (by Michael M. Rosen). The contemporary Jewish thought (Gershom Scholem, André Neher, Byron Sherwin, Henri Altan, Moshe Idel) as well as a Primo Levi’s short novel have explored the ethical implications of the story of the golem, offering deep insights on the necessity to put some limits to the uses of AI in order to prevent destructive byproducts of its extraordinary potentiality for humankind.
